Yasushi is a striking capybara, very charismatic and sensuous with an exceptionally long coat. He has a sort of Einsteinesque, rumpled professor look, as if he had weightier things on his mind than looking smart.
The female capybaras adore Yasushi. They follow him round, vie for his attention, nuzzle him, rub against him and act coquettishly in his presence. As number one in the hierarchy Aki makes her presence felt. She will sometimes bark at a potential rival to intimidate her, or even chase her away. She is often to be seen sitting near him, keeping an eye on him, making sure the other females, especially her sister gentle Donguri (Yasushi’s favorite) don’t get too close. I’ve noticed that she is always in the background in my videos of Yasushi. Pretending to be asleep. Looking very superior, like a prim maiden aunt.
One afternoon, we were just leaving when the Capybaras, who had been resting under the walkway in their pond hidden out of sight, decided to come out. Their appearance was heralded by ten or more minutes of glorious singing. A capybara chorus all singing in unison is one of the most captivating and memorable sounds in nature. It was quite magical as a procession of capybaras appeared, singing incredibly loudly, filling the air with their magical sound. They then started playing. Yasushi and lady friend of the moment, Momiji, looked very amorous. She rested her head on his back… he looked dreamy.
Yasushi was usually the catalyst for the mass migration into the pond. He would make a move and his adoring herd would follow. Similarly if he moved towards the poohing pond, a shallow area of water, but water none the less, no matter how unromantic it sounds, his female of the moment would follow. While Yasushi wallowed in the water, she would roll over and try to attract his interest, playing coquettishly, laying her head on his back, nibbling him under the chin, something he loved and which sent him into a state of bliss. Often one or two of Yasushi’s other would be lovers would be in attendance.
Video: I think these two are exceptionally cute….Little baby Io chewing on Daddy Yasushi’s ear in the pond, scrambling on his back and playing with him. Yasushi adores it, his hair rises pouffily, he gets that blissful, slightly ‘out of it’ look. When Io finally swims off Yasushi looks quite ruffled. Yasushi loves having his ears rubbed, and baby Io seems to know this Baby Io Chews Yasushi’s Ear 赤ちゃんイオ。チューズ靖の耳
Yasushi loves having his ears rubbed. He goes all blissful and rolls over when I rub his ear and he’s in the mood for pampering.
From my diary for 12th August 2012: Yesterday he was swimming lazily in the pool with his ‘love interest of the day’, Momiji. She was making all the running, nuzzling him, laying her head on his back, rubbing her nose against his face. At one point he took her shoulders in his forepaws as they reared out of the water and their noses touched (looking for all the world like a human couple in love). When baby Io swam over and interrupted their love play, Yasushi immediately went off to play with him, like an indulgent father.
Video: Most Handsome Capybara “Yasushi in Love” 最もハンサムなカピバラ”愛の靖”. Turn the volume up to maximum to hear the beautiful sounds of capybaras singing. My camcorder doesn’t begin to do justice to the magical sound of 14 capybaras singing in Unison. The Handsome Capybara is playful, surrounded by his adoring female capybaras. Rolling and covorting in the pond:
Later 6 or more female Capybaras came to join in the lover’s frolic. I’m expecting babies in 5 months time and it will be interesting to see who the mother is.
Yasushi often has sex on his mind as he waits while the empty trays for the watermelon are put out, and goes round sniffing the bottoms of nearby females. Perhaps he is just bored of waiting so long for the watermelon to arrive. When the watermelon finally arrives all thoughts of being a gentleman vanish from his mind, and the female who a minute earlier was his ‘love interest’ may find herself being nipped if she stands in the way of a choice bit of watermelon.
When watermelon time comes, baby Io will take on Yasushi for a juicy piece of watermelon, but I think Io knows Yasushi will always be fatherly and gentle with him.
Yasushi seems very paternalistic as if he feels responsible for his ‘tribe’. When Keide, who often escapes, managed to slip through the entrance gate and go off to the grassy slope round the corner of the hill out of sight of their enclosure, Yasushi looked visibly concerned for her now that he could no longer protect her, and she was apart from the herd. He walked along the edge of the enclosure following her progress, worried that if any danger befell her he would not be able to help her. It is usually the same 5 who escape, including Maple, her mother Keide, sister Momiji and of course Aki.
When he is in the mood Yasushi loves being pampered. He is an amazing sight, with his long hair standing on end. In a state of ecstasy, he rolls over, his lips part and his beautiful long teeth come into view. He hates to roll over too far and as his state of ecstasy progresses, he always ends up on his back. Immediately he sits up, a fearful look in his eyes.
Sometimes, in the heat of the day in August, Yasushi just wanted to sleep after watermelon time. Children would come over and try to pet him or feed him. He would ignore them. If they persisted he would move a foot or two away and turn his back on them. He never, ever tried to bite them; He never betrayed the slightest sign of temper. I was amazed at his forbearance, grace and gentlemanliness.
The Capybaras at Nagasaki Bio Park never bite anyone. Even though a lot of senseless people and children poke them and do other stupid things, and thoroughly deserve to get bitten. They can always escape to their huge pond if they want to get away from humans, but most of the time they just put up with it. The older females, who don’t seem to get the same pleasure out of pampering, often go into the pond while the others remain in the petting area.
Dare I venture…Yasushi is a typical male, he often has sex on his mind and he likes gentle females like Donguri.
From my diary at the start of our time at Nagasaki Bio Park: If I sing to Yasushi everyday will he remember me….Surprisingly he did seem to remember me, and he always seemed very relaxed and pleased when I came over to him, whereas he sometimes looked worried when complete strangers wanted to pet him.
In the photo above, Donguri comes over and wants to be with Yasushi. However she seems to sense that Aki is not happy with her presence, so poor Donguri goes away. You can see her face in the top right-hand corner.
What I find interesting is how little the proximity of large numbers of visitors has impacted on the group dynamic of this ‘herd’. It’s almost as if the humans provide entertainment (pampering and feeding) the way a human might go to a Spa or restaurant. As it is mainly a procession of strangers visiting the enclosure, the capybaras don’t bond with people the way a pet capybara does, so the social ties of the herd are not affected and are as strong as with a wild herd. The Bio Park is only open 9-5 (5.30 in August) so the rest of the day they are free of humans.
Yasushi was born in October, 2005.
His father was Umi who lived to be 14, an exceptionally good age for a capybara. His mother was Marilyn.
Yasushi is a magnificent capybara to have as the breeding male, with his amazingly flamboyant long hair, and gentle, tolerant personality. I wonder what will happen to him when he is replaced as boss capybara by new blood? I hope he will have a large enclosure with at least one female for company, so that he can live out his years joyfully into old age.
Unfortunately nobody at the Biopark or Kyoto Zoo read this. When Yasushi’s time as breeding male was finished he was put in solitary confinement with no other capybaras and no humans petting him. He died a very sad and lonely capybara.
Video: Cute Capybara Lovers Courtship かわいいカピバララバーズ求愛 –
I love this video. You can see how frisky Aki gets at the prospect of mating with Yasushi. First she sees off a potential rival. Then she gleefully rubs her morillo. Then she does a frisky little dance of joy. Yasushi wanders off to the poohing pond (it doesn’t sound very romantic, but it IS water and the courting capys love to roll around in it). Aki follows him and rolls coquettishly to attract his interest. Yasushi, Aki and the capybaras at Nagasaki Biopark displaying their courtship and mating behaviour.

I love Aki in the background, looking very superior. She always keeps an eye on Yasushi and follows him around. I hadn’t noticed her sitting so close to him, making sure the other capybaras don’t get too close.
